2021 Strands & Keywords

PME-NA 2021 List of Strands

For this year’s conference, we have created new strands and reframed others. Most notably, we reconfigured the mathematics content strands from being organized by content area (e.g. Geometry, Algebra, Number Concepts) to being organized by grade band (Elementary/Middle Years, comprising early childhood, elementary, and middle-grades mathematics topics; and Later Years, comprising secondary and post-secondary topics.) 

StrandDescription
Curriculum, Assessment, and Related TopicsThis strand is for proposals that focus on curriculum analysis, development, implementation, assessment and evaluation, or on technology as curricular or assessment tools.
Equity and JusticeThis strand is for proposals that focus on marginalization, systems of oppression, or other similar issues related to mathematics education at any level or in any context.
Professional Development/In-Service Teacher EducationThis strand is for proposals that focus on in-service (practicing) teacher learning and professional development.
Mathematical Knowledge for TeachingThis strand is for proposals that focus on teachers’ (or teacher educators’) mathematics knowledge in relation to teaching.
Mathematical ProcessesThis strand is for proposals that focus on topics related to the Process Standards such as, but not limited to: problem solving, reasoning and proof, modeling, etc.
Mathematical Content Early/Middle Years (Grades preK-8)This strand is for proposals that focus on mathematical content for students in the early and middle levels. This encompasses the previous years’ strand of Number Concepts, Algebra, Geometry, etc., for content situated in the early childhood, elementary, and middle school grade bands.
Mathematical Content Later Years (Grades 9-12+)This strand is for proposals that focus on mathematical content for students in high school and undergraduate levels. This encompasses the previous years’ strand of Number Concepts, Algebra, Geometry, etc., for content situated in the secondary and post-secondary grade bands.
Policy, Leadership, and Miscellaneous TopicsThis strand is for proposals that focus on policy matters; teacher leaders, coaches, or teacher educators as the subjects of research; or for topics that do not fit well within another strand.
Pre-Service Teacher EducationThis strand is for proposals that focus on the development of prospective teachers and their knowledge, beliefs, and/or attitudes.
Student Learning and Related FactorsThis strand is for proposals that focus on students’ experiences and the influence of various factors (e.g., beliefs, diversity) on mathematical learning.
Teaching and Classroom PracticeThis strand is for proposals that focus on analyzing the nature of classroom instruction and activity (e.g., discourse, culturally relevant pedagogy).
TechnologyThis strand is for proposals that focus on the use and development of technology for, and in, teaching and learning.
Theory and Research MethodsThis strand is for proposals that focus on the development of theory and/or research methods.
