2021 Productive Provocations

Following on the success of the Plenary Provocations started during the 2019 PME-NA conference, the organizers of the 2021 PME-NA conference in Philadelphia, PA (http://www.pmena.org/pmena-2021/) invite applications to participate in one of the conference’s plenary sessions. Like in 2019, this session will take an unconventional approach. Rather than featuring one or two scholars in the field discussing their work, it will include up to five speakers at varying stages of their careers offering provocative interpretations and visions of the current and future state of our field, as inspired by the conference’s theme.

Through a series of 10-minute talks around the theme of “Productive Provocations – Persevering through Challenges,” this session will invite conference attendees to reflect on aspects of our field either through or about struggle. Provocations could focus on the challenges of the past year in particular, or enduring challenges in mathematics education. As during the 2019 conference, the focus will not be on particular research questions, but rather how the field is structured and operates. Additional information about the conference theme can be found at: http://www.pmena.org/conference-theme.

Individuals interested in presenting one of those provocations are invited to create and submit a 2-minute video of themselves delivering the core element(s) of their argument. Junior members of the field, including graduate students, are especially encouraged to enter submissions. Those selected will receive free conference registration.

Organizers will select the final roster of speakers in order to cast a diverse ensemble of ideas, voice, and representation. Across all submissions, organizers will consider the novelty and scope of ideas, and how engaging/dynamic the presentations are.

Please submit your video file (or a link to your video) directly to the conference local steering committee by email at 2021pmena@gmail.com with subject line “Plenary Submission.” Alternatively, you may upload through Flipgrid, using the link https:// flipgrid.com/d73077dd and guest password: PMENA2021. Video submissions are due no later than Sunday, August 8, at 11:59pm PDT.
