You are cordially invited to participate in the twenty-sixth conference Annual Conference of the North American Chapter of the International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education (PME-NA), to be held in Toronto, Ontario in October 21 to 24, 2004. The conference is sponsored by the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. The conference provides a forum for the exchange of research information on the psychology of mathematics education. English is the official language.

History of PME

PME came into existence at the Third International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME-3) in Karlsrühe, Germany in 1976. It is affiliated with the International Commission for Mathematical Instruction.

Goals of PME-NA

The major goals of the International Group and the North American Chapter are:

  1. To promote international contacts and the exchange of scientific information in the psychology of mathematics education;
  2. To promote and stimulate interdisciplinary research in the aforesaid area, with the cooperation of psychologists, mathematicians, and mathematics teachers;
  3. To further a deeper and better understanding of the psychological aspects of teaching and learning mathematics and the implications thereof.

Conference Theme

The theme of the conference is Building Connections between Communities. We especially encourage proposals that highlight examples of the interplay between research and practice–practice that has been shaped by research and research that grows out of practice.

The website for reservations at these low rates is http://www.deltachelsea.ca/pome If you decide to call directly at 1-877-814-7706, please quote YUYTGR and the Psychology of Mathematics Conference.

Travel Planning

All major airlines fly into Toronto at the Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Taxi service is available from the airport to the Delta Chelsea for approximately $40 CAN. The Airport Express shuttle drops off at the hotel for a single fare of $15 CDN but is the last stop from the airport so it takes about an hour en route. Rental cars are also available at the airport. Driving directions from Pearson International Airport: Take Hwy 427 S to QEW E towards downtown Toronto. The QEW becomes the Gardiner Expressway. Take the Gardiner east and exit on Bay St N. Turn right onto Gerrard St and hotel is on the right. There is bus service between the Airport and one block from the hotel. The subway station called College Park is one block north of the hotel at the corner of Yonge Street and College Street (the hotel is at Yonge Street and Gerrard Street which is one block south of College Street. More information about the link between the airport and the subway system is found at http://www.city.toronto.on.ca/ttc/service_to_airport.htm

Minutes of PME-NA Annual Meeting
July 17, 2003
Honolulu, Hawaii

The meeting was called to order by Joe Zilliox, President of PME-NA at 4:40 p.m.

Treasurer’s Report
Anne Teppo gave the treasurer’s report. Joe Zilliox noted that there were low funds the proceedings for this year’s conference were twice as long as expected and also because UGA has still not completely paid PME-NA back. He expects about $14 K from UGA and about $10 K from this meeting but not until the fall of 2003.

Debriefing about this year’s meeting
This conference was attended by 470 people from 34 countries. The division of proceeds from this joint conference will be based on registrants’ locations. After loans for this conference are repaid (e.g., facilities and proceedings), the extra money will be divided according to who attended. All registrations will count toward PME. PME-NA will receive half the registration amount paid by everyone from North America. In the general PME meeting, Ron Tzur and Tad Watanabe were elected to the steering committee.

Recognition for Past Service
Joe Zilliox thanked Maria Trigueros for her diligent service on the PME-NA steering committee during the last 3 years. He gave her a Lei for thanks and recognition.

Future Conferences
The 2004 conference will be in Toronto, Canada, and will be chaired by Doug McDougall. Skip Wilson volunteered to lead the 2005 conference at Virginia Tech. It was decided to accept his offer so Skip Wilson, President-elect, will direct the 2005 meeting. The 2005 meeting will probably be held in Blacksburg, VA, USA.

Election of Officers
The Steering Committee needed two new members: one from Mexico and one at-large (to replace Skip Wilson who was an at-large member but is now the president-elect). Maria Trigueros was nominated for the Mexico position. Nominated for the at-large position were Jo Olson from University of Colorado Denver (Heidi Staeber, Bridget Arvold) and Bryan Mosely from Florida International University (Joe Zilliox, Ron Tzur). Kay McClain moved that the nominations be closed and the motion was seconded by Joanne Rossi-Becker and unanimously approved. As the only nominee, Maria Trigueros was declared the winner for the Mexico position and blank index cards were distributed to all attendees for voting about the other position. Joe Zilliox instructed everyone to write one person’s name on the card. Cards were collected and votes counted. Jo Olson was elected to the PME-NA Steering Committee. Maria’s and Jo’s terms will be for 3 years, 2003-2006.

Thanking Joe Zilliox
For his service as president of PME-NA and direction of this conference. Doug McDougall gave Joe a Lei and gave him thanks.

2004 Conference
Doug McDougall provided information about the next conference. The conference will be held Oct. 21-24, 2004 in Toronto. Registration will be about $320, proposal submission will be electronic, and the deadline for submission will be January 15, 2004. Proposals will be allowed in English, French, and Spanish, although all papers in the proceedings will be in English. Details about working and discussion groups are still to be determined

New Business
There was none and the meeting adjourned at 5:24 p.m.

Minutes prepared by Skip Wilson
